Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice

There was something about sugar scrubs that always interested me. I had seen them in stores like Marshalls and HomeGoods, but I had never tried any. Then I got the idea to look for online tutorials on how to make sugar scrub. I found several sites that had different "recipes" so I bookmarked them to find them again easily.

August is the month of birthdays in our family. My dad, mom, brother, older sister, grandmother, and one of my nephews all have birthdays in August and then add in all the anniversaries...August is a busy month! Since  I need a lot of birthday gifts, I decided that I would try to make some sugar scrubs.

For my grandmother, Gammy, I decided to use these directions to make lemon sugar scrub. She loves lemon and since this was the first time making sugar scrub, I wanted directions that had specific proportions. Bekah, who was my helper, and I put it in two half-pint canning jars and we had enough left over to have a little bit in a container for ourselves and to wash our hands when we were done. We added some pretty yellow fabric to the lid and made a label stating what kind we made. One was put in a gift bag for Gammy's party. The other went in the gift box for an occasion we needed a quick gift.

Then we moved on to Mom's scrub. We took these directions as a jumping off point. We used:
   ~ 1 cup sugar-in-the-raw or turbinado sugar
   ~ 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
~ 2-3 tablespoons ground coffee (caffeine is supposed to have tightening effects)
   ~ 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
   ~ 1 teaspoon coconut extract

You can really use any amounts of any ingredients for your add-ins. We chose to make coconut mocha because we knew we liked that Starbucks drink and if we could replicate that smell then that would be so nice.

Both of them were happy with their gifts. I've used the lemon and my skin feels so soft afterwards. I think I'll try experimenting with different add-ins in the future.

I love sugar scrubs. I use one on my face that is sugar, glycerin and tea tree oil. I just mix it up - no measuring.

Thanks for sharing at Handmade Christmas 2012 (http://www.schneiderpeeps.com/2012/10/homemade-gifts-for-women.html)
